What Does a Tour Manager Do?
A tour manager oversees all parts of a tour. They handle the business side of traveling and playing shows. They are a high-level planner.
Their main job is to coordinate travel, logistics, and money. They plan things out before the band ever hits the road. They manage the budget to make sure the tour makes money. They keep track of how much is spent and how much comes in.
They also book all the travel. They buy the flight tickets, reserve hotel rooms, and rent tour buses. They make sure the music gear and the crew can get to every single venue on time.
Do Tour Managers Go On Tour?
A tour manager does not always have to travel with the band. Since they are planning from a high level, they can do this job off the tour. They can work from an office at home.
They stay in constant contact with the people on the road. They talk on the phone to venues, promoters, and the crew. If a big problem happens, they can help solve it from far away.
If the tour manager is not traveling with the band, they will often have road managers who are on the road making sure everything goes smoothly.
Tour Manager vs. Road Manager
A tour manager and a road manager are related, but they have a clear difference.
The tour manager plans the tour from a high level. They book the logistics. The road manager is a hands-on person. They are actually on the tour managing the day-to-day operations. The tour manager creates the schedule, and the road manager makes sure the band follows it.
These roles can overlap. The tour manager can also be the road manager. On a large tour, there could be one main tour manager, with a separate road manager for each band. Other times, the tour manager acts as the road manager only for the headlining band.
