Sound Curfew

a rule about when music must stop

“The show is set to end at 10:30pm so that we have some time for an encore before sound curfew at 11pm.”

What Is a Sound Curfew?

A sound curfew is a deadline for loud music. The venue must stop playing amplified sound by a certain time.

Curfews may also include sound level limits. The venue may be allowed to play at a certain volume until the curfew. Then there would be a new limit after curfew or simply no amplified music allowed.

This is usually set by local government. Cities have noise ordinances. These laws protect residents from late-night noise.

Some venues set their own curfews. They may have agreements with neighbors. Or they may want to avoid disturbing the community.

Common Sound Curfew Times

In many cities, the curfew is between 9:00pm and 11:00pm. After this time, music must be quieter or stop entirely.

Some venues have different curfews on different days. They may be allowed to play later on weekends.

Outdoor venues may have earlier curfews while indoor venues may be allowed to play later.

How To Get a Sound Curfew Extension

Getting a sound curfew extension requires planning and communication with local authorities. Start the conversation early, weeks or months before your event.

Some cities have a formal application process for extended hours. There may be forms to fill out, fees to pay, or public notice requirements. Find out what the process is from local code officials if information is not available online.

Be clear about why you need an extension. Emphasize that you are willing to work with the city to minimize impact on neighbors. Propose steps to reduce noise impact, such as closing doors and windows, using sound dampening equipment, or limiting outdoor space.

Be forthcoming and cooperative with local officials. They may not grant your request, but it’s not personal. Focus on building a good relationship with them for the future.
