Load In

the act of a band bringing their equipment into the venue or the time that they are scheduled to do so

“What time is load in for the show tonight?”

What Is Load In and Load Out in Live Music?

Load in is when bands bring their equipment into the venue. It happens before soundcheck and the show. Load out is when they take their equipment out after the show.

During load in, band arrives with their gear. They carry it into the venue. They set it up on stage. They might also plug things in and make sure there is power. The next step is typically soundcheck.

The load out happens after the show. The band packs up their gear. They carry it out of the venue. They load it into their vehicle.

“Load in” and “load out” are also used as a shorthand way of saying “load in time” and “load out time.” A band member may ask, “when is load in tonight?”

When Does Load In Happen

Load in times vary depending on the situation.

For a club show, load in might be a few hours before doors. The band arrives, brings in their gear, and has time to set up.

For a theater show, load in might be earlier. The band needs more time to set up a bigger stage.

For a festival, load in might be the day before. The band arrives early to get their equipment in place.

The load in time is usually in the contract. The venue promises to have the space ready. The band promises to arrive on time.

The Role of Venue Staff during Load In

During load in, the band works with venue staff.

The stage manager helps coordinate. They tell the band where to set up.

The production manager may help with technical issues. They make sure the stage is ready.

Security may check the gear to make sure nothing dangerous is brought in.
