What Is an Input List?
An input list is a detailed list of every instrument and microphone that needs to be amplified for a specific performing group.
It tells the venue how many microphones and direct boxes are needed. It tells them what is being amplified by each input.
The input list is part of the technical rider. The venue uses it to prepare for the show.
Without an input list, the venue does not know what to expect and is unable to prep the stage before the performers arrive.
What Is Included in an Input List?
An input list includes details about every sound source.
For each input, it lists:
- What is being amplified (drum, guitar, voice)
- What kind of microphone or direct box is needed
- Where on stage it goes
- Any special requirements
More complex input lists have dozens of inputs. A full band with multiple instruments can need twenty or more inputs.
How Are Input Lists Used?
The venue gets the input list before the show.
The sound crew reviews it. They make sure they have the right microphones and equipment.
They set up the stage before the band arrives. They place microphones and direct boxes in their approximate place on the stage according to the stage plot if they have one.
If there are multiple performers taking the stage on the same night, the crew will make sure there are enough inputs on the stage for all of the performers in all the groups before soundcheck.
It is likely that several inputs will be shared by all groups.
What Is the Difference Between an Input List and a Stage Plot?
The input list and stage plot are related but different.
The input list is a written list of every sound source on the stage.
The stage plot is a diagram that shows where things are positioned on the stage. It shows where each person and piece of gear goes on stage.
Both are important and are often included on the same document.
Why Do Input Lists Matter?
Input lists matter because they help the show run smoothly.
They allow the venue to make sure they have all the equipment for the show. If they are missing something from the input list, they can make sure to rent it or have the performers bring it themselves.
Input lists allow the venue to prepare the stage for performers before they arrive. When the band arrives, everything is set up. Soundcheck goes faster. The show starts on time.
Time on a show day is valuable. When there is plenty of time for soundcheck and no one is in an hurry, everyone is happy.
As a band, submitting a detailed input list makes you look professional. It’s a good way to get off on the right foot with the sound engineer at the show before you arrive.
