Headliner

the main act at a show

“The headliner came on stage at nine o’clock and played for two hours to close out the night.”

What Is a Headliner?

A headliner is the main attraction at a show. They are the act that most people came to see.

Headliners usually perform last. They take the stage after all the openers have played.

Headliners typically get the most money from the show. They also tend to get the best treatment. They get the biggest dressing room. They get the most soundcheck time.

The term comes from the idea of being at the top of the bill. The headliner is listed first on the poster and written in the biggest letters.

How Are Headliners Chosen?

Headliners are usually the most popular act on the bill. They have the biggest fan base. They are typically chosen for their ability to sell tickets.

Predicting ticket sales is very difficult. Promoters and venues use several tools and data sources to estimate how many tickets an artist will sell in a specific city:

Historical show data – Past ticket sales from the artist’s previous shows at the same venue or similar venues in the area.

Streaming data – Spotify, Apple Music, and other platforms can show how many listeners an artist has in a specific city or region.

Social media metrics – Following and engagement numbers from Instagram, Facebook, and other platforms filtered by location.

Search trends – Google Trends can show how many people are searching for an artist in a given area.

Booking agent input – Agents often have data on an artist’s draw and can provide estimates based on their experience.

Comparable artist analysis – Looking at similar acts to estimate potential ticket sales.

Local market knowledge – Promoters familiar with the area know what works and what does not.

Who Chooses Headliners?

Club shows – The promoter is usually the primary decision-maker. They book acts, take on financial risk, and are responsible for filling the room. The venue must approve the booking, but the promoter typically has control.

Theater and arena shows – A promoter still leads the booking, but the venue has more input. The venue’s brand and audience matter more at this scale. Large venues often work with specific promoters they trust.

Festivals – Festival organizers or producers choose headliners. They build the lineup around the festival’s theme and budget. This is a top-down approach where the headliner sets the tone for the entire event.

Private events – The event host or organizer chooses the headliner. This could be a corporate client, wedding party, or private party planner.
