Live Music Glossary Front of House

Front of House

the sound system that is directed toward the audience; can also refer to the audience area

“The Front of House engineer adjusted the mix so the vocals were clearer for the crowd.”

What Is Front of House?

Front of House (FOH) has two meanings. It can mean the sound system that plays music for the audience. It can also mean the audience area of a venue.

The Front of House sound system is what the audience hears. This includes the main speakers, all speakers and subwoofers that face the audience, and the mixing board.

The person who runs this equipment is the Front of House engineer. They sit somewhere in or behind the audience area and mix the sound that the audience hears.

What Does a Front of House Engineer Do?

The Front of House engineer runs the sound system for the audience. They are sometimes called the FOH engineer.

During soundcheck, the engineer creates a mix for each band. They need to keep track of which inputs are connected to which instruments for each group.

If there is no monitor engineer, they would also perform the job of a monitor engineer. They would work with the band to get every performer’s monitor mix adjusted to their preferences.

During the show, they are constantly on alert and listening to get the mix just right.
