What Is a Draw?
A draw is the number of fans a band can bring to a concert. If a band expects 100 people to buy tickets just to see them, their draw is 100 people.
It is a measure of an artist’s ability to attract an audience. When a venue asks, “What is your draw?” they want to know how many tickets you will sell.
Why Is Your Draw Important?
Having a good draw helps you get booked and paid more.
If a venue is confident you will bring people, they are confident they will make money from tickets and drinks.
Because of this, they will choose to book you over an act with less draw. A strong draw also gives you more power to ask for higher pay.
How Do You Build a Draw?
You build a draw by building a fan base. You can do this by playing great live shows, releasing good music, and making social media content.
Most importantly, create a way to communicate direclty to your existing audience. An email list is one of the best ways to capture your audience because you have full control over it. But a social media account can serve the same purpose.
How Do Talent Buyers Estimate Draw?
Talent buyers need to know a band’s draw to make smart choices. But a draw is not a hard number. It has to be estimated for each show.
To guess how many people a band will bring, buyers look at a few things:
- Past Shows: They ask how many tickets the band sold at older shows.
- Fans Online: They check the band’s social media and email list. If a band has many active fans online, they will likely sell more tickets.
- Data Tools: They use music industry websites like Pollstar or Songkick to track ticket sales. This shows how popular the band is in different cities.
If a buyer is not sure about a band’s draw, they might book them for a small show first to test them out.
